Capoeira Gets UNESCO Cultural Heritage Status

Capoeira is a martial art that originated from Brazil. Slaves of African descent were the ones who have created the martial art. The UNESCO has added Capoeira to its list of cultural manifestations known as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity last November 26.

The new status of the Brazilian martial art was announced during UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage that took place in Paris. The martial art is played in more than a hundred countries across the globe. It is a vital exponent of Brazilian culture and they share it to people all over the world.

Being recognized as a heritage of Brazilian culture, capoeira becomes the greatest promoter of Brazilian culture all over the globe. Marcio Pereira, a capoeira instructor, said that teching the martial art to children, as well as the lessons and philosophy of the sport, is a very rewarding experience. He is happy to work with them because they are pure. They always speak the truth and laugh for real.

The martial art was once a fight and a performance. Capoeira is a sport, ritual and dance in one. It has various styles and a strong significance to the Brazilian culture. It is a vital manifestation of the Afro-Brazilian culture and the UNESCO award shows the important recognition of the diverse culture in the country.
